 Corporate donations

There are a number of laws in the UK relating to organisations raising money for charity, where funds donated relate to the sales of goods and services, and when they publicly promote this contribution. In this scenario, the person or organisation is defined as a Commercial Participator under the Charities Act and is required to have a contract with the charity that they are raising funds for. You can read a little more about this here.

These types of partnerships have tax and VAT implications, and come with additional reporting obligations for both the organisation raising funds and the charity.

If you wish to discuss this kind of a partnership then please contact us:

The MSF logo is a hugely valuable asset to MSF and we have strict rules in place as to how it can be used.

At MSF, the safety of our staff and patients is always at the forefront of everything we do. MSF is renowned for not using armed security in countries in which we work. Our logo is our primary use of protection and is found on our uniforms, vehicles and the flags that fly over our facilities. Our logo is an emblem of the respect that MSF has earned in the countries in which we work due to our key principles of independence, neutrality and impartiality.  It often means that we are able to work in places that are too dangerous for others.

For this reason we are incredibly careful of how our logo is used and as a general rule, in the UK we do not share it with our corporate supporters (as a standalone entity).

We may  be able to supply a special 'Fundraising' logo, please get in touch:

If you want to raise money for Médecins Sans Frontières, but are stuck for ideas, then check out our A-Z of fundraising ideas. There you will find all the inspiration you need, from doing a sponsored walk to hosting your own event. It's fundraisers like you that help us deliver medical care where it's needed most.

Setting up a fundraising page on JustGiving is an easy way for your friends and family to sponsor you. They can Gift Aid their contributions and all donations are automatically paid into MSF's account. You can also regularly update your page with photos and an activity blog to let supporters know how you're progressing.

The easiest way to pay in your funds is by making a donation on our website.

Alternatively, you can make a donation over the phone by calling our offices on +44 (0) 20 7404 6600 and asking to speak to a member of the Fundraising Team.

If the above options don't work for you, please send a cheque made payable to ‘MSF-UK’ along with a covering letter to:

Please note: If you would like us to claim Gift Aid on your donation, the government requires that we have a Gift Aid form, for each individual making the donation. We cannot claim Gift Aid where a collection is made or if the cheque covers donations from more than one supporter.

Our Gift Aid collection envelopes are an easy way for individuals to complete a Gift Aid declaration and keep their donation separate from other donations.

If you would like us to send you some, please get in touch by calling the Community and Events Team on the above number or emailing us at fundraisinghelp@london.msf.org.

We'd be happy to share some of our MSF-branded materials to help with your fundraising. If you’d like to order some fundraising materials, please email the Community and Events Team at fundraisinghelp@london.msf.org

Ask your loved ones to donate the money they would have spent on a gift for you to MSF instead. The best way to do this is by setting up your fundraising on Just Giving today.

If you'd like to give people the option to donate via cheque and Gift Aid their donation, please get in touch via tributes@london.msf.org to order your collection envelopes today.

An online tribute page where friends and family can make a donation in memory of your loved one is a very special way to commemorate their life. It also provides an option for those who cannot be there on the day to leave a message of support and make a donation.

By selecting Médecins Sans Frontières as your charity on JustGiving or MuchLoved, the funds you collect will go straight to our medical work.

We can also provide donation envelopes to collect donations at the service. Donations can be made by card or cheque and Gift Aid can be claimed on individual donations, which will add 25p for every £1 donated.

To order envelopes or for further support, please call our Community and Events Team on +44 (0) 20 7404 6600 or email tributes@london.msf.org.

Our UK office is responsible for sending 300 inspiring doctors, nurses, logisticians and other project staff overseas each year. When they've returned home, many of them are happy to share their stories and talk about the reality of life working for us overseas.

If you'd like to request a speaker for an event, please fill in our online speaker request form and we'll do our best to find you an inspiring speaker.

Gift Aid is a UK government scheme that allows UK taxpayers to increase the value of their donations to a UK charity by 25% at no additional cost.

MSF will re-claim the basic rate of tax you’ve already paid from the government. In practice this means that for every pound donated using Gift Aid, we can claim an additional 25 pence from HMRC. For example, if you make a donation of £10, MSF will reclaim £2.50 in tax from HMRC so you must have paid £2.50 in tax during the tax year.

You can Gift Aid your donations if you pay UK Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax at least equal to the amount of Gift Aid claimed on your donations in that tax year. You could pay Income Tax if you:

  • pay tax from your salary before you receive your wages
  • have to fill in a self-assessment tax return form each year
  • have taxable savings, maybe a pension plan or income from investments

The tax year starts on the 6th April and runs until 5th April the following year.

You will need to complete a Gift Aid declaration. Declarations will be included on all MSF donations forms and you will be asked when making a donation on the phone.

You can also complete a Gift Aid declaration now by:

This declaration will cover all the donations that you have made to MSF in the last four years and any that you choose to make in the future. If your donations are only eligible for Gift Aid from a certain date, please let us know when completing the declaration.

If you do not pay tax, or do not pay enough Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover the Gift Aid that could be claimed, you should not Gift Aid your donations. We would be very grateful if you could let us know that your donations are not eligible for Gift Aid to ensure our records are up to date.

You can contact us by:

Gift Aid declarations do not expire. Therefore, we do require an explicit notice to cancel a Gift Aid declaration. Unfortunately, leaving a Gift Aid box blank for example is not enough to cancel or amend this. We aim to regularly remind our supporters that Gift Aid is being claimed on their donations.

If your circumstances change and you no longer pay enough income or capital gains tax to cover the amount of Gift Aid claimed by MSF, please cancel your declaration by contacting us.

We would be very grateful if you could provide your full forename and full residential address, this helps HMRC to match your Gift Aided donations to your tax record.

Please let us know if your name or address changes.

Unfortunately not. Gift Aid declarations can only be made by an individual for themselves. Please provide one name only. The individual must be the Gift Aid eligible taxpayer who is making the donation(s).

Whether you're paying tax at the basic rate of 20 percent or at a higher rate, MSF only benefits from the basic rate of tax.

For example, a higher rate taxpayer who pays tax at 40% makes donations to MSF through Gift Aid. They can claim back the difference between the higher rate of tax at 40 percent and the basic rate of tax at 20 percent on the total value of their donation (the ‘gross donation’). This can be claimed back on a Self Assessment tax return. Donors who do not complete a Self Assessment tax return can call their tax office and have the higher rate relief reflected in their PAYE tax code. If you need a summary of your donations for each tax year, please contact us.

For further advice on personal tax relief, please contact HMRC or your accountant. You can read more about Tax relief when you donate to a charity on the HMRC website.

Yes, you must still pay enough UK Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax to cover the Gift Aid that could be claimed.

While every gift to MSF is gratefully received, the best way to help us respond in an emergency is with a residuary gift – a percentage of your estate after your loved ones have been considered and provided for.

Residuary gifts have the advantage over a specific sum of money, as inflation will not reduce their value over time.

Alternatively, you can choose to leave a pecuniary gift – a fixed amount of money.

Unrestricted gifts give us more freedom to act.

We will endeavour to spend your money in an area of the world that is close to your heart, if that is what you wish. However, please understand that we are an emergency organisation and that we may no longer be needed in the partcicular country or project you have in mind. If we cannot fulfil a restriction criteria included in your will, your gift will fail.

A "Letter of Wishes" allows you to outline your desired restrictions. Please note that while these letters are not legally binding, they serve as a valuable reference for us to understand and respect your intentions.

We advise you to see a solicitor to help you draw up your will. You can find a local solicitor on the Law Society website under 'Wills, Trusts and Probate'.

MSF UK does not offer a free will writing service.

Research undertaken with MSF supporter focus groups found that a free will writing service was not favoured. Our supporters have told us that we should minimise our fundraising costs and shouldn't use their donations to offer a free will writing service. We advise you to see a solicitor to help you draw up your will. You can find a local solicitor on the Law Society website under 'Wills, Trusts and Probate'.

MSF is not part of the Disasters Emergency Committee or any DEC type group globally. We are focussed on our accountability to our supporters and only launch fundraising appeals when there is an urgent financial need.

MSF relies heavily on unrestricted donations from our supporters, which allow us to work in a flexible way. This reflects the ever-changing needs of our work and ensures we can provide assistance wherever the need is greatest. It also allows us to respond quickly when there is an emergency.

MSF is unable to accept donations of medical supplies or equipment.

MSF's ability to provide effective medical services depends on our established logistics set-up which allows our medical teams to accurately forecast and request specific quantities of items required - reducing wastage and our transport footprint. We are also bound by the import regulations of the countries we work in which often require certificates of origin, batch testing and manufacturers' consent to import.

Organisations which can accept some medical supplies and equipment include Inter Care and Medical Aid International. Please check carefully with them which items they can accept before sending any donations of supplies or equipment.

Please contact our Supporter Care Team who will be happy to help:
