Eswatini briefing
Formerly known as Swaziland, Eswatini is a small, landlocked country in southern Africa. It is also one of the world’s last remaining absolute monarchies.
Although it is improving, Eswatini still has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world. Around one-third of adults are HIV positive, which also increases their vulnerability to tuberculosis and other infections.
Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) started working in Eswatini in 2007 focusing on HIV, drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB), and COVID-19. Through decentralised care and innovative treatments, our teams are helping people with tuberculosis and HIV live longer, healthier lives.
In 2023, we opened a new project in Eswatini, aimed at tackling sexual health-related illnesses through innovative practices and community engagement.
